Hundreds of masks and puppets have been created with scenic design by leading British designer Richard Hudson; lighting by Donald Holder, costume design by Julie Taymor, and choreography by Garth Fagan. Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi adapted the book who were a part of the animated feature. The entire savanna comes to life here and you can’t help but marvel at the breathtaking manifestation of animals miraculously brought to life in an inferno of fabulous imagination by a cast of over 50 actors. Continuing for three hours, The Lion King employs 232 puppets, 27 kite-birds and143 people and nearly a hundred others to create its magic.
In its essence it is a human story and Taymor created giant masks that would represent characters such as Scar and Mufasa, but left the human face revealed below the mask so that the actors’ facial expressions would not be lost. To put across the atmosphere of The Lion King in a live theatre, she used ingenious hazy staging techniques. For famous wildebeest stampede she created a false perspective of great distance by placing five earth-colored portals one behind the other. She then used a canvas scroll and a series of large rollers to create the illusion of thousands of racing animals. The effect in the theatre is electrifying as thousands of wildebeests seem to be rushing straight at Simba — and at the audience! This is a spellbinding interpretation of the Disney film that stands on its own. Taymor’s uphill effort and zealous endeavor manages to suspend disbelief and hypnotize the whole theatre audience.
This adaptation of the animated Disney film Lion King Broadway was the winner of six Tony Awards in 1998 including Best Musical, Choreography and Direction and has gained critical acclaim and immense popularity for its amazing special effects and incredible staging.
